We are committed to preserving and protecting our precious island environment and

natural resources for future generations. We are dedicated to continuously

strengthening the enforcement and financing of environmental protection efforts. 

We are dedicated to supporting public education that encourages environmentally sound values and practices which developes the skills and knowledge needed to support a sustainable environment.

 

OUR PLAN consists of:

 

· Pursuing Renewable Energy sources for the Republic in order to reduce reliance on fossil fuel and to minimize associated costs and environmental impacts;

· Developing national land use guidelines to be implemented by the states addressing issues of land clearing, logging and reforestation as well as relevant ‘zoning’ and ‘building code’ requirements and standards;

· Improving waste management, sewer and water systems in all of the states in Babeldaob and outlying areas;

· Effectively working with states to designate appropriate conservation areas;

· Developing effective financing mechanisms that support the designation and management of conservation areas throughout Palau, and that ensure revenue streams to our states;

· Strengthening of quarantine and customs regulations and through improvement of local capacity to monitor Palau’s borders in deterring the introduction of invasive species into Palau;

· Partner with State Governments, Non Governmental Organizations, and communities to identify innovative ways of addressing environmental issues such as invasive species; and

· Strengthening our capacity to actively participate in international environmental forums to fulfill the Republic’s obligations.

Surangel and Billy believe that real success is measured by maintaining a balance of improving the quality of life for Palauans by ensuring sustainable economic growth and development, while preserving and protecting our vulnerable island environment - a balance of the People, the Economy, and the Environment.

 

They also believe that sustainable growth preserves the Palauan culture and environment, while providing for a vibrant economy that is self-sufficient and allows its citizens to share in its prosperity. Achieving sustainable development requires that we take care of our human

resources, OUR people.  “A kot a rechad er Belau”. They believe that we must make sure that Palauans have the opportunity to be properly trained so that they can be successfully employed.

 

Surangel and Billy also believe that we must level the playing field so that our citizens are given the same opportunities for employment.  Surangel has continued to advocate for a uniform higher minimum wage to offset the increasingly high cost of living.  Surangel and Billy also advocate providing incentives that make Palauans more competitive. These measures will result in encouraging employment of

Palauans.
